A Girl After Every Geek's Heart
I gave Lane her birthday present early this year, since I had to install it and I wanted to make sure it worked before I told her about it. Although it might sound odd for a soon-to-be-eleven-year-old to practically swoon over such an item, Lane did indeed request and receive a new graphics card for her computer. I had just a little trouble with it. I first ordered a less-expensive but roughly comparable card and tried to install it about a week ago. I stared dumbfounded at the innards of her computer for a good two minutes as the slow realization that the AGP slot was missing sank in. Go Dell. So I have to return that one (luckily I hadn't unwrapped it yet, so I'm just out shipping to send it back to Amazon). I ordered a replacement PCI card (for those who have no idea what I'm talking about, there are three ways to connect a video card to a computer, in order from best to worst: PCI-E, AGP, PCI; ironically, the PCI-version of the card I originally bought was $30 more expensive) that arrived last Wednesday, and after I put the twins to bed on Saturday I spent an easy five minutes installing it and a frustrating hour trying to get it to work. Turns out Dell's BIOS doesn't have a way to disable the onboard video directly, and because it was reading two graphics cards I was getting conflict problems (not to mention the installation program wouldn't use the drivers supplied on the CD). After downloading the newest drivers and *still* not having a taskbar (which makes it hard to get into the Control Panel), I finally managed to disable the onboard video through the desktop properties, which fixed everything. I was going to surprise Lane with it today, but she beat me to it. The drivers installed an Nvidia icon in the taskbar that she picked up on immediately (according to Lisa, within a couple of minutes of turning on the computer). By the time I showed up this evening to give her the empty box, she'd already been playing the Sims 2 on the higher video settings for several hours. Then she showed me how to light her Sim on fire. Happy Birthday. :)
The patriarch of my clan celebrates another year today (making him, once again, 30 years older than my brother, just as he is 30 years younger than my grandfather; that makes it easy to remember their ages). I already mailed the card, and I considered calling him at 2 a.m. just to be the first to give birthday wishes, but I'm not sure that would fall into the "appreciated" category (and I'm almost certain my mom would be unhappy), so I'll try to call him later today (what the majority refers to as a "reasonable hour"). He doesn't read my Web log, so this is mostly a reminder to those of my family members who do read it. Not naming names or anything. Humor aside, my dad's a great guy. He's volunteered for more things than I can count (he was a wrestling coach, a Boy Scout leader, a member of the school board, etc., and he still serves as a volunteer EMT and a something-or-other in his church, on top of being self-employed). He's also one of the most honest men I've ever met (even if his belief in doing business on a handshake has cost him a time or two). He and I don't really see eye-to-eye on a lot of specific issues (and I inherited his stubbornness, which means the two of us can clear a room if we start debating), but I've always admired his core values and his "do what you can for other people" ethos. I also inherited his "stand up for what you believe in, regardless of the consequences" stance, to my mother's chagrin (being stubborn about doing the right thing isn't always the most popular opinion with employers). I think everyone who knows him would agree that he's a great guy, and he deserves to have a happy birthday. :) Labels: birthdays

On this date, 52 years ago, in the small town of Oshkosh, Nebraska, Roy Lynn Cooper was born. Growing to become a man of excellent character and integrity, he would go on to carve a niche for himself as one of the finest general contractors in western Nebraska, along the way fathering four children, one of whom has a Web log that he's currently using to announce his father's age to the world. ;)
Actually, my dad doesn't read my Web log very often, but some of the family members who will see him today do (and if you're one of them and forgot it was today, well, you still have a few minutes, the Kwik-Stop is still open).

Candles and Cardboard
Happy Birthday to Amanda, who celebrates her 22nd cycle today. :) I hear an apocryphal rumor (through unnamed but reliable sources) that she's buying presents for all her friends . . . ;)
I received what can only be described as a " piece of cardboard" in the mail today. At first I thought Barnes and Noble screwed up. Then I thought maybe it was the outer cover to something and someone stole the rest of the package. Then I noticed that one part of it was slightly thicker than the rest, but I couldn't find an "open here" indication of any sort. So I carefully tore open one part (I didn't want to cut it open for fear of damaging its contents), and sure enough, inside was a manual that I ordered a month ago and forgot about. Cast into the cardboard. Barnes and Noble really needs to reconsider their packaging.

Birthdays Downunder, Mate (and other vaguely Australian-sounding phrases)
I have to routinely calculate the time difference between me and the rest of my family (who are all one time zone over), which also leads to such amusements as trips to my hometown taking 5 hours one way and 7 hours the other. But those calculations pale in comparison to the slide rules and graphing calculators I have to get out to figure out what time it is in Australia. I usually just break down and ask my friend Mull:
Me: Catch you later. :) (I'd say "night," but I have no idea what time it is there.)
Mull: It's almost 8:30pm.
Me: Tuesday or Wednesday?
Mull: Wednesday.
Me: So you're like 15 hours ahead of me?
Mull: Something like that.
Me: What's life like in the future?
Mull: Oh, it's good, if you avoid the roving gangs and take care of your organs.
Me: What are the winning lottery numbers?
Mull: Hmm, I think there was a 2 . . .
This is all relevant because it's Mull's birthday. Or rather, it's his birthday there. I think. It's not his birthday here for another 10 hours. Or something like that. In any case, Happy Birthday, Mull. :) Labels: birthdays
