No Smurf Jokes
I started painting
the spare bedroom first (the room I'm going to use the least, so in case I screwed up the paint I wouldn't have to look at it every day). First coat (in a lovely Cosmic Blue) went on fine, except I ended up being
a quart short (and had to go back to Lowes; I, being the genius I am, went right when the store opened on the day after Thanksgiving - the biggest shopping day of the year - across the street from Nebraska Furniture Mart, where a thousand people were camped out in front of the store before it opened . . .). Second coat went on over the first (a delightful Deep Space) in
a faux finish. I actually painted two test patches (one of each color) on the wall and tried out a variety of faux finishes before picking the sponge roller (the stupid twin-cotton-roller thingy that was the most expensive was the worst).
Ceiling went on fine. Then
the border around the ceiling, which seems to be a two-person project (I had some trouble keeping the border from coming off while I was moving the ladder). And, of course, I was
4 feet short. :P So I had to go back for another pack. This room doesn't look too bad (I still have to paint the trim, and I want to get some nicer switchplates and a light fixture). It's a little dark (darker than I was expecting); note to self: lighter paint. I also ordered some black metal bunk beds at Nebraska Furniture Mart today (yes, bunk beds). Jeff and I haven't slept in bunk beds since I was 9, but we'll see which one of us gets the top bunk.

Roof Over My Head
So I'm in that classification of Americans known colloquial as "homeowners" and practically as "people who have borrowed the gross national product of most third-world countries." Go me. The payments haven't actually started yet (minus closing costs and insurance, which I've already paid), so I'm just not eating for the next three years. Donations welcome.
I started this separate Web log to chronicle the various repairs/improvements/updates/masochistic inflictions I'm doing, mostly to keep my mom in the loop (bookmark this page, Mom). :) Anyone else is welcome to read it, but it's not directed at a public audience so it's a little less formal (and somewhat vain).
