| My thoughtful mother gives me a subscription to my hometown
paper for Christmas every year so I can keep up with people I don't see anymore (isn't
that thoughtful?). The Garden County News includes a section entitled
"Only Yesterday" that prints short news items that were published in the News
during previous decades (going back 70 years), which provides an interesting glimpse at
what life was like in former times. I'm not gullible enough to believe the nonsense
about "the good old days" or how "things were better then" (the
"good old days" lacked modern medicine, gender equality and broadband internet
connections . . .). But, the clippings from previous decades are still fun to
read, if only to remind us of how much things have changed. Occasionally something in
this section really catches my eye (usually when it involves me getting stitches 20 years
ago or news about one of my grandparents from the forties). The February 20, 2003
issue carried the following:

It would appear that not only were the "good old days" better, but they had
more talented Boy Scouts, as well. I don't recall seeing the Liposuction merit badge
during my scouting days . . . |
