Philosophy - (fi los'
e fe), n. a system of
principles for guidance in practical affairs

| Everyone has a worldview, a particular method of looking at
the world and the forces that shape and interact with it. I like to think I'm
open-minded, but even so one has to start somewhere . . . |

Politics
As a result of being unenthused with either of the main political parties or the entire
two-party system, I'm registered Independent (which is a polite way of saying
"marginalized"). I'm lean to the left on the political spectrum ("too
far left" according to some people; "not far enough left" according to
others), if you want to get into the whole "liberal/conservative" thing,
although I'm not that impressed with those labels. The world has more than two
dimensions.
I am, however, a big First Amendment supporter, as well as an Equal Rights supporter.
Pro-free speech. Anti-discrimination. Pro-secular government.
Anti-religious government. Pro-gay rights and gay marriage. Anti-death
penalty. So on and so forth.

Religion
I'm an atheist (which doesn't mean I worship demons or any of those other fun
stereotypes of atheists; it just means I don't believe in any sort of gods or other
assorted supernatural entities). As a result, I support a secular government (which
doesn't mean that religion is outlawed; it means that all religions are treated on equal
grounds and no religion is given preferential treatment - i.e., Christianity carries the
same weight as Zoroastrianism
and Shintoism).

Humanism
I also subscribe to Secular Humanism, which is a worldview based on reason, dignity,
respect and compassion. It rejects dogmas and relies on reason and scientific
inquiry to determine truth and to find solutions to human problems, and is designed to
help both individuals and society in general build a better world for ourselves and our
children.

The Environment
As animals existing within an ecosystem, humans have a natural place and can co-exist
without displacing other species, but humans have jeopardized the planet with
short-sighted plans that threaten the entire system. Unless humans learn to treasure
the planet and its inhabitants and find ways to exist upon it as but one of billions of
species, the future of the human race is grim.
